Happy Birthday Oreo Cookies!!!!

Happy Birthday, Oreo Cookies!!! That's right, today the Oreo turns 102 years old. That's a lot of double-stuffed goodness! Originally called the "Oreo Biscuit", the cookie we know and love was created in 1912 by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) and has since gone on to become the most popular cookie in the world, available in over 100 countries. People everywhere love Oreos, especially this girl!

The name "Oreo" may  come from the French word or for gold, or the Greek word oreo, which means beautiful. Or it might just be another silly product name. Like Haagen-Dazs. It isn't German or Danish, its completely made up so people would think its foreign and buy it. True story.

The Oreo we borderline worship has also changed quite a bit over the years. There were originally two varieties available, the regular cream ones we still enjoy today, and a lemon meringue that got discontinued in 1920.  Chocolate always beats fruit, its the law.

The cookie's filling was first made with pig fat, but has since been replaced with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. They are also Kosher and vegan, having no dairy or animal proteins in them. Go figure.
(This is the creamy filling....Its vegetable shortening)

Currently, there are quite a few flavors available besides the original and the Vanilla ones: Cookie dough, chocolate, berry, lemon, mint, marshmallow, and peanut butter. Not as delicious as the original, I'm sure. Well, except for double-stuffed, released in 1975. Those are the best variant.

Then there is the international flavors: Green tea ice cream, dulce de leche and banana, orange and mango, and strawberry and vanilla.

If eating them is more of your thing than learning about them, Oreos are also a great ingredient for baking! You can out them in a cheesecake,

Or bake them into brownies,

(Made these before. Amazing. Try them. Now!)

and, of course, put them in ice cream.

(You call yourself 'cookies and cream', but we all know what you really are...)

Still, Oreos took quite the blow last year when it was shown that they may be more addictive than a certain illicit substance. But whatever, I'll continue to eat the filling first for years to come.

If you want to try making some homemade Oreos, try this awesome recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction. Its really fantastic!
