Happy Valentine's Day....er, Lupercalia....er, Anti-Valentine's Day?

It's that time of the year again when lover's come together and present each other with sweet and earnest examples of each others love: Chalk-flavored heart candies, chocolate, flowers, and, of course, sentimental Valentine's Day cards.

Of course, over the years this sacred day of consumerism had become segmented, much like the many fandoms on Pinterest that are making funny Valentine's Day pins to their favorite characters today. 

Gotta love the Trekkies! You can also be barraged by numerous pins of Loki/ Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumbersmaug, er, I mean Cumberbatch.

Sheesh, I'm sorry. John is right, you are a drama queen.....

Anyways, There also seems to be a quickly growing group of history nerds that refuse to acknowledge Valentine's Day (at least on the internet). They prefer the throwback Roman festival of Lupercalia, which honors the she-wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. Its also a fertility  festival. Makes sense. They celebrated it in a very traditional and upstanding way.

Rome was so classy! Getting whipped with the goatskin would promote fertility in the barren and ensure a safe delivery for pregnant women. Surprisingly enough, the failed Roman ruler Marc Antony was a Lupercalia priest, so he would run around whipping women.

Yeah, I could definitely see him doing that.  Marc Antony liked the ladies~ and a dude named Curio, but that's another story.

And then there is the Anti-Valentine's day crowd.

We all know them and have probably at one time or another been one of them, myself included. Some can be a little overbearing in their views and hatred, but most just eat chocolate on their couch all day while watching Monty Python....um, maybe that's just me. DON'T JUDGE! This group, though, seems to be getting pretty legit. Going as far to have actual Anti-Valentine's day events and special activities to perform 

There are pages upon pages of this stuff. For reals.

 Sounds more and more like a real, non-spiteful holiday to me! Take that, judgmental relatives!
